Reed spent his early childhood years in Navasota, Texas and Shawnee, Oklahoma, attending Woodrow Wilson Grade School before the family moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma. His father worked for the government, and his mother was a homemaker. Reed attended the West Division School in Community Consolidated School District 62 until 1939. in the northern Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois, the only child of Helen (née Teaverbaugh) and John Robert Rietz, who were high-school sweethearts and married at 18. ![]() The following year, Reed earned a third Emmy nomination for his role in the miniseries Roots. His special interests were numerous to include landscaping, cruising, boating, caring for his wonderful cats, fishing, dining at ethnic restaurants and spending time with his friends and family. He was an accomplished expert in culinary arts. Joe had numerous publications and seven patents related to his work with his field of expertise. Joe served as the President of the Association of Old Crows-Garden State Chapter, an organization for individuals who have common interests in Electronic Warfare, Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations, Cyber Electromagnetic Activities, and Information Operations from 1989 to 1991. After his work at CECOM, Joe served as Senior Science Advisor at US Army Southern Command where he completed his career. Joe rose through the organization with his last assignment at Fort Monmouth being an Associate Director in the Headquarters. His area of expertise was laser technology and electronic warfare. He served in the Department of the Army as a civilian working for the Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) in the Research, Development and Engineering Center. Joe had a long and distinguished career at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Joe completed his BS and MS education in electrical engineering at Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT) and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Joe received an honorable discharge as a proud veteran with military service in the United States Army. ![]() His lifelong friends and colleagues were a special part of his life. Precious granddaughters include Larissa, Victoria and Amanda Coreas. His children are Michael Schwartz of Wall, New Jersey and Laura Coreas (Tony) of Simpsonville, South Carolina. Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Diane Brady Schwartz. He is survived by his brother, Ronald Schwartz (Ann) of Red Bank along with many loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents as well as his sisters Patricia August and Carol Muhlenforth. He was born in Newark New Jersey to his parents, Joseph and Germaine Schwartz. Joe was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. ![]() Joe previously lived in Fort Myers, Florida and Sea Bright, New Jersey.
